Understanding Varicose Veins: Causes, Formation & Ayurvedic Perspective

At Dr. Sudarsan’s Ayush Ayurveda, we believe that understanding the root cause of a condition is the first step toward healing it naturally. One common condition we address through Ayurvedic principles is varicose veins—a circulatory disorder that affects both health and quality of life.

But what exactly causes varicose veins, and how do they form in the body?

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted, and often painful veins that most commonly occur in the legs and feet. They can appear blue or dark purple and are often raised above the skin’s surface. While they may start as a cosmetic concern, over time, they can lead to discomfort, swelling, heaviness, and even skin ulcers.

Veins carry blood back to the heart, moving it upward, especially from the legs and feet.

To help this upward flow, veins have small one-way valves that prevent blood from flowing backward due to gravity.

These valves ensure blood flows in one direction — toward the heart.

Ayurvedic View on Varicose Veins

In Ayurveda, varicose veins are closely related to vitiation of Vata dosha. Vata governs movement and circulation in the body. When Vata becomes imbalanced:

It leads to poor circulation and dryness, weakening the walls and valves of the veins.

The accumulation of Ama (toxins) due to improper digestion and poor lifestyle can clog the channels (srotas), further disturbing blood flow.
